About the play

Please note that the play is performed in Danish.

In a sensory and musical performance, Betty Nansen Theatre breathes new life into age-old folk songs, each chosen for its power to draw us closer to nature—and in doing so, closer to ourselves.

Nature is terrifying. Nature is wondrous, enchanting and magical. Nature is us. The once prevailing notion of nature as something distinct from humanity is slipping away. We speak of returning to nature, but the truth is, we never really left.

These folk songs convey a worldview where humans are woven into the same fabric as mythical creatures, fallen leaves, and wild roses. Forces beyond our control ripple through us and around us. In this performance, nature is animated by enchanted beings that creep into the life you believed was yours alone. And all of a sudden humans find themselves alongside sea spirits, elf maidens, and marsh men.

The journey isn’t one of venturing out into nature, but rather venturing inward—to a place where joy and fear coexist, where communities are as much about ocean currents and apple trees as they are about people.

This performance is part of a broader initiative called BETTY UDVIKLER developed in partnership with the Bikuben Foundation.
