About the play
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PLAY IS PERFORMED IN DANISH.
One of world literature’s greatest novels, famously adapted into a musical, is now presented in its raw theatrical form—without the songs.
This is the gripping story of the convict and hero, Jean Valjean. It is a tale of profound emotions and a fierce clash between conservative power and revolutionary forces. Jean Valjean is an outsider. His starving sister and her children, for whom he steals bread, are outsiders. Their neighbors, friends, sisters and brothers are outsiders. Meanwhile, France’s bourgeoisie climb higher while their sharp heels dig into the shoulders of a vast, grimy mass of wretched souls.
Norwegian star director Kjersti Horn has devoted much of her career to exploring what she calls outsidership—those who are not us because they cannot be, and we refuse to let them. In this production, she breathes new life into this socially critical epic, ensuring that we cannot look away from the suffering and the outsiders our society has created.
Produced in collaboration with DET NORSKE TEATRET.
The performance has been created as part of a comprehensive process called BETTY UDVIKLER, in collaboration with the Bikuben Foundation.
