Betty's art posters

At Betty Nansen Theatre, we are dedicated to the performing arts, but we also explore other creative avenues such as visual art. We have revived a beloved Betty Nansen Theatre tradition where we collaborate with contemporary artists to produce an annual art poster, each created with complete creative freedom.

ART POSTER #7 BY ROSE EKEN

Rose Eken says about her work from the 2024/2025 season:

"The art poster pays tribute to the invisible stage life that unfolds behind the scenes before, during and after every performance. I have a background as a stage technician, and I often let the objects left behind and overlooked – empty bottles, cigarette butts, junk food – take centre stage in my works. When I visited the Betty Nansen Theatre, I found inspiration in the costume department, where worn patent leather shoes, sky-high heels, boots and trainers are stored while they wait for a new lease of life in future productions."

ART POSTER #6 BY GUDRUN HASLE

Gudrun Hasle says about her work from the 2023/2024 season:

"In 2019, I created a work featuring a house with arms, which dealt with motherhood and the feeling of being trapped in a home and having to keep control of it. The motif of becoming too big for the house comes from Alice in Wonderland, which is one of the most fascinating and exciting themes in the book. I knew from the start that this was the theme I wanted to work with. It became obvious when I saw one of the early rehearsals with the team, where they developed a choreography. It was fun to see how the body parts moved around. After I saw the mood boards for the performance, I thought it would be interesting to emphasise the sexual aspect and the feeling of being trapped in one's body.

I got costume pieces from the tailor's room, which was really cool because it's the first time I've worked that way, and it defined what I could do. I got a piece of Alice's dress and other costume pieces that I thought were nice."

Art poster #5 by Søren Behncke

Søren Behncke says about his work ‘Betty’ from the 2022/2023 season:

"Frederiksberg is... like falling in love. I have many crushes, and Frederiksberg is one of them. Frederiksberg Allé in particular is a real gem, a very special place, with a wide street, a view of Frederiksberg Garden and beautiful trees that are exceptionally beautiful when the red colours of autumn hit them. That is why I have also let autumn hit the artwork.
The Betty Nansen Theatre is... a gem within a gem. It is beautifully situated and part of the fantastic avenue. I call both the theatre and the work Betty – without the surname, because it feels as if we are all on first-name terms with the dear lady. Betty is almost like a friend. A friend of both the city and the arts."

Art poster #4 by Emily Gernild

Emily Gernild says about her work ‘The happening is on its way’ from season 21/22:

"Something has just happened, or is about to happen. The flickering flame reveals a movement in the room: perhaps a door has just been opened. I have tried to capture the mood just before something happens, before someone enters the scene.
The scene is set as an everyday scene, there is both a chicken leg and other objects that in themselves indicate everyday life, but it can go in any direction. Anything can happen.

I knew early on that I didn't want to paint an illustration of the theatre. I wanted to capture the atmosphere of a theatre. The atmosphere at Betty. Something is about to happen. I don't know what it is, and that's not the point."

Art poster #3 by Mie Olise

Mie Olise says about her work ‘Two Shadow Standing (on a chair with eyeball headmask)’ from the 20/21 season:

"First and foremost, it is roughly painted with clear brushstrokes. There is a lot of me in it, in the sense that you can see my process. And then it is a work inspired by following Betty. I was allowed to walk around freely during the rehearsal periods for the two performances Livstidsgæsterne (Lifetime Guests) and Kejseren af Portugalien (The Emperor of Portugal). I saw the graphic references from the set designers, and it was deeply inspiring."

Art poster #2 by Morten Schelde

Morten Schelde says about his work ‘Great Expectations’ from the 19/20 season:

"I chose to draw the auditorium because it is the heart of the theatre – it is where things actually happen. But I have left the auditorium empty and called the work “Great Expectations” to capture and magnify the atmosphere of anticipation that exists among the audience and actors before a performance begins – in short, “the space of potential”.

Art poster #1 by Anika Lori

Anika Lori says about her work La primadonna in a nutshell from season 18/19:

‘It depicts a prima donna or a Don on the edge of the stage, shrouded in magic and mystery in front of an audience, where the drama unfolds. I think it's a wonderful cultural experience that you can take home with you and remember fondly. And I also like the idea that art reaches out to people in their homes and passes on the story."
