BETTY NANSEN THEATRE RESEARCH ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL
Since 2019 artistic researcher Mette Tranholm has been researching the Betty Nansen Theatre's collective creative processes. This work has now resulted in an article which has been selected for publication by the international Journal for Artistic Research.
Led by artistic researcher Mette Tranholm, head of Betty Develops, the theatre has spent the last five years experimenting with new ways of creating stage art together. Tranholm has followed and documented the special method – co-creation – which is the way of working at the Betty Nansen Theatre. And helped develop it.
The article “Renegotiating the notion of artistic genius – within the frame of an institutional theatre”, which has just been published in the latest issue of the Journal for Artistic Research, illuminates what happens to understandings of the ‘artistic genius’ and the ‘star’ when collective methods and ways of producing stage art are implemented in the traditionally hierarchically structured institutional theatre.
The article points out that the use of the co-creative method in the practice of the theatre not only characterizes the scenic expression of the individual performance, but also changes the very understanding of the performing arts from something that originates from one individual (the artistic genius) to a relational act and something that occurs between people

“Having a researcher employed is a huge gift for a theatre and ensures, among other things, that we can share our work with a lot of new artists, colleagues in the industry and interested parties both at home and abroad. We are proud to appear in a medium that only shares high-quality artistic research“, says CEO at Betty Nansen Theatre Eva Præstiin.
